Barbara Masterson
Barbara is a contemporary plein-air artist whose passions for life and art are seen in her colorful canvases. Painting outside with acrylics in a grisaille underpainting, she then uses oil paint over the grisaille to capture the true effect of color in sunlight and shade. By limiting her palette, Barbara intensifies the mood of her work and challenges the viewers to look at colors perceived versus what is seen.

In 1971, Barbara graduated with an AAS in Fine Art from Elizabeth Seton College. Barbara applied to New Paltz College and received her Bachelor's degree in Art Education in 1988 and her Master of Art in painting in 1990. During this time Barbara studied the figure with Franklin Alexander at Barrett House in Poughkeepsie and in Woodstock. She has also studied painting with Mel Stabin, Christine Debrowski and in 2002 studied with Gale Barnett in Giverny, France. In 2004, Barbara painted in the fabulous Tuscany area of Italy. The resulting paintings can be seen at her studio.

Barbara is inspired by dramatic lighting of the landscape and the peaceful mountain farm which she lives. Painting on location heightens the emotional charge and the sensual depth in Barbara's work.

She has participated in juried, solo and group shows throughout the United States and has won several awards. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in the United States, Italy, Germany and Guam.

Barbara is a member of New York Society of Women Artists, New York Plein Air Painters, Mixed Media, Barrett House Galleries, Dutchess County Arts Council  the Highland Cultural Center, Arts Alliance, and Oil Painters of America.
